Honorary Degree Programme

The Honorary Degree Committee is currently accepting nominations for honorary degree awards and professor emeritus status.

PURPOSE OF THE HONORARY DOCTORATE DEGREE: The honorary doctorate degree will be the highest honor bestowed by the University among the various awards given beyond the granting of earned degrees. The purpose of the nomination should be motivated principally as a tribute to worthy individuals as defined below. The honorary degree is not equivalent to nor a replacement for an earned degree.

The honorary degree would be used to:
• recognize and honor exceptional men and women who have given a substantial part of their lives to serving others and who have distinguished themselves throughout their professional careers and/or volunteer service;

• establish a public association between Norway University and such exceptional men and women, thereby providing testimony to the values and quality of Norway University;

• assist Norway University with its goals and objectives in areas of educational programming, service, and institutional advancement.

Norway University selectively and judiciously awards honorary doctorates of letters to individuals of exceptional academic, scholarly, artistic and/or philanthropic accomplishment in order to bring honor and recognition to Norway University and to identify persons whose accomplishments and service to humanity can be considered exemplary.

Proposals for honorary degrees must be considered by the University's Council. Any person may suggest a name and several dozen proposals are made each year. These are reviewed by a committee of the Council, chaired by the President of International Extension and Affiliation Office, which makes final recommendations.

The degrees awarded are honorary doctorates in divinity (D.D.), law (LL.D.), science (Sc.D.), letters (Litt.D.), and music (Mus.D.). Occasionally, the University will award an honorary Master of Arts degree, usually to recognise exceptional service in a local context. Each application goes through a rigorous evaluation process. Comparatively few honorary degrees are awarded and many candidates are rejected.

Please fill in the Honorary Degree Application / Recommendation Form (PDF), Nomination Form (PDF) and return it to us with the documentary evidence.

The program is designed to evaluate the highly accomplished individuals in their field and grant the appropriate title to the candidate. The University offer this program to the deserved individuals who can demonstrate their success in their career field and satisfy the Honorary Degree Committee that they are eligible to apply for such an honor.

An honorary is issued and granted by Norway University will not be purely done on material or monetary means, academic and/or research contribution will be required.
